Biography of Joe Frank Smith, MD, FACS, FARS
Dr. Joe Frank Smith earned his medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine in 1985. In 1986, Dr. Smith completed his surgery internship at the St. Louis University Medical Center, and in 1991 Dr. Smith completed his residency in Otolaryngology at the University of Florida. Dr. Smith is a Fellow of the American Rhinologic Society, the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and the American Medical Association; he is a Member of The American College of Physician Executives, the Alabama Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, the American Academy of Facial Plastics and Reconstruction Surgery and the American Rhinologic Society; and he is a Diplomat for the National Board of Medical Examiners.
Dr. Smith founded the Dothan ENT Center in 1991. In 1997, the center merged with Ear, Nose and Throat associates to create what is now known as Dothan ENT, Allergy and Asthma.

Dr. Smith earned the prestigious “Doctor of the Year” from the Southeast Alabama Medical Center in 1993. Since that time he has served as Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery for the University of Florida College of Medicine and he has served as Chief of Surgery for the Southeast Alabama Medical Center. In 1999 he was honored by the University of Florida College of Medicine with the “Annual Joe Frank Smith M.D. Lectureship and Resident Graduation” for the Department of Otolaryngology. That same year, he and wife were presented with the “Dr. Joe Frank and Kristi Smith Otolaryngology Conference Center” located at the University of Florida.
Dr. Smith has given more than 90 professional presentations, including (1) “Sinusitic Strabismus,” which he presented to the International Rhinologic Society, the American Rhinologic Society and the Mayo Clinic in Washington, D.C. on September 21, 2000, and (2) “Endoscopic Sinus Surgery for the Treatment of Sinusitis and Surgical Treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea,” which he presented to the University of Florida Medical Update Conference, in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands on August 5, 1992. Moreover Dr. Smith has published on his own or collaboratively these research articles: Presumed Sinus-Related Strabismus, Head and Neck Melanoma, Branchial Cyst Anomaly in a Newborn and Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising in a Pilonidal Sinus.
Dr. Smith and his wife Kristi have been married since 1985 and have two sons: Jordan and Hugh Andrew.
