POSTOPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS:
TEMPERATURE-CONTROLLED RADIOFREQUENCY TREATMENT FOR OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA
Posttreatment Instructions:
- There may be increased swelling and edema in your upper airway the first 24-48 hours, lasting up to 1 week after the procedure.
- Typically swelling is not excessive. Dr Lindman’s office must be contacted for significant swelling.
- An abscess, or collection of infection, in your tongue is a rare complication of this surgery. Should you experience worsening tongue swelling, pain, fevers, or trouble swallowing, please contact Dr Lindman’s office.
- Continuation of CPAP is recommended for patients with sleep apnea until clinical indications of tongue reduction are apparent.
- Diet is as tolerated
- Posttreatment pain can be controlled by prescription or over-the counter analgesics. This is usually for 3-5 days, although each patient my experience varying degrees of pain. Over-the-counter throat lozenges may be used as needed.
- Sleep upright the first night, either with several pillows or in a recliner.
- Snoring may be worse the first week after surgery, therefore head elevation is recommended.
- Use antiseptic mouthwash (i.e. Scope, Listerine, etc) twice daily for first 3 days.
- Dr Lindman may also place you on an antibiotic.
- Remember, you may require several treatments to achieve the desired result(s).
